Stella Gardens Farm Management Apprenticeship

Michael Fields Agricultural Institute- East Troy, Wisconsin

Stella Gardens is a certified organic, hands-on training farm that instructs students in vegetable, herb and flower production at Michael Fields in the New Farmer Foundation Year and Whole Farm Workshops.

Stella Gardens includes:

    • 1-acre of raised beds planted in the French-intensive method and are worked by hand

    • 2-acres of semi-mechanized production

    • Soil building green manures and cover-crops are incorporated throughout the land in production

    • Greenhouses supplement the gardens, extend the growing season and enable students to learn plant propagation

    • Perennial Fruit Production

    • Biodynamic preparations applied

    The remaining acres of Michael Fields Agricultural Institute includes:
    • Research for an open-pollinated corn breeding program;

    • Integrated cropping systems with forage crops;

    • Organic vegetable production for the wholesale and retail markets;

    • Small grain rotations and pasture, much of which is leased to an outside organic dairy operation;

    • Twenty-acres of wooded buffer strips;

    • Woods and wetland areas
